Integrated Energy Infrastructure for Data Centers – Including Grid Connection, Generation, and Storage

Data centers need one thing above all else: a lot of electricity—around the clock. A reliable, continuous power supply is crucial for the stable operation of servers and cooling systems.

And due to advancing digitalization, growing cloud demands, and an ever-increasing number of AI applications, the demand for data centers in Europe is rising dramatically. IT capacity in Europe is expected to at least double by 2031—and with it, electricity demand. For 70 percent of data center operators, the biggest challenge is grid access, followed by finding suitable space.

And while the need for data centers is growing rapidly, regulatory requirements are also increasing: Starting in 2027, data centers must meet their entire energy needs using renewable energy sources.

With our own solar parks, battery storage systems, and substations, we take a holistic view of our energy system and understand what matters most in planning and coordinating with all stakeholders. Depending on your data center’s needs, we offer the environment you require through our own commercial properties.

We transform conventional commercial land into “powered land,” complete with a secure energy supply and sustainable energy.

New Opportunities for Local Governments

Shaping Structural Change Through Data Centers

For municipalities and landowners, data centers present opportunities to attract long-term investment to the region. They can offer particular potential for transformation in structurally weaker areas, as their establishment drives local economic growth. Opportunities for value creation arise both from new, data-intensive industries that seek proximity to data centers and from those that wish to utilize waste heat.

To bring these projects to fruition, we coordinate with all stakeholders and handle all planning steps on our infrastructure sites or at new locations. Commercial and industrial sites, expansion areas within existing commercial zones, brownfield sites, and sites with development potential are all of interest—whether for purchase or lease. Who Benefits from Data Centers?

Computing Power and Data Security Requirements

  • Industry 4.0, such as robotics and autonomous vehicles, requires enormous computing power for simulations and digital twins.
  • IT, media, and telecommunications encompass major cloud providers as well as streaming services, gaming providers, and social media platforms.
  • The financial sector and banks require secure and highly available environments for sensitive customer data, transaction processing, and online banking.
  • The healthcare sector—including hospitals and pharmaceutical companies—generates massive amounts of data that must be secured through digital patient records, medical imaging, and research into new drugs.
  • The public sector—including government agencies and administrative bodies—processes confidential citizen data. These entities often require strict local compliance standards and data sovereignty.
  • Research and science, including universities, research institutes, and weather services, require extreme computing power for complex scientific calculations.

Ways to Utilize Waste Heat

  • District heating networks can utilize waste heat after raising its temperature using heat pumps.
  • Municipal facilities can use heat, for example, to maintain swimming pools, sports arenas, or laundries.
  • The food industry—such as chocolate manufacturing, dairies, or bakeries—needs heat for purposes such as keeping food warm, fermentation, or drying.
  • The chemical and pharmaceutical industries require preheated air for manufacturing processes, as well as heat for cleaning, fermentation, or storage.
  • The agricultural industry has a constant need for heat, for example, for greenhouse cultivation and vegetable farming.

Energy Expertise on an Industrial Scale

High-Performance Locations as the Foundation for Data Centers

The growth of data centers is primarily hampered by access to energy. Grid bottlenecks and lengthy permitting processes further hinder many projects.

We bring both of these together for you: suitable AI-ready locations and energy infrastructure. We develop, build, and operate on an industrial scale. We handle the grid connection for round-the-clock power supply, but can also cover part of the supply via a direct-wire connection from our own green generation and storage facilities under reliable terms.

Our approach: everything from a single source. With over 600 engineers, project developers, and energy experts, we handle the planning, engineering, construction, and operation of solar parks in the multi-megawatt range, as well as green energy storage and marketing.

Drawing on this experience and our facilities, we develop energy-intensive data center sites in accordance with BSI criteria.

An Overview of Our Services

Site Development and Permitting Planning

We identify suitable sites and guide projects safely through all permitting processes. In doing so, we keep both regulatory requirements and local conditions in mind.

Grid Connection and Substation Expertise

We handle the technical planning and implementation of grid connections—including substations. This ensures that the electricity generated is fed into the grid efficiently and reliably.

Development, Construction, and Operation of Industrial-Scale Solar Farms

We implement large-scale photovoltaic systems from the initial concept through to long-term operation. In doing so, we manage all project phases in an integrated manner—from planning and construction to the operational management of the plants.

Integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

We combine solar farms with high-performance battery energy storage systems to enable flexible use of electricity. This allows us to meet grid requirements and stabilize fluctuating electricity demand.

Operation and Technical Maintenance Throughout the Entire Lifespan

We ensure the performance of the systems for decades through professional operations management and predictive maintenance. This allows us to guarantee consistently efficient operation.

Electricity Marketing and Long-Term PPA Structures

We develop and structure long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs)—tailored to market requirements and customer needs.
